Getting to know Nash County
History
Nash County was formed in 1777, carved out of the western portion of Edgecombe County after residents on that side found the trip to the county seat in Tarboro too difficult. The county takes its name from General Francis Nash, a North Carolina Revolutionary War officer who commanded North Carolina's regiments at the Battle of Brandywine and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Germantown that same year. Nashville, the town that would become the county seat, was settled by migrating families around 1780 and officially chartered in 1815 — a name that, fittingly, also honors General Nash.

Things to Do & Parks
Nash County Parks and Recreation, based in Nashville, runs a set of public facilities that includes ball fields, outdoor basketball and soccer courts, a walking trail, an all-inclusive playground, and a lawn used for community events. In Rocky Mount, the Rocky Mount Greenway links several city parks and gives residents on the Nash County side a scenic, connected place to walk, run, or bike.
The county's calendar leans into its agricultural roots. Spring Hope hosts the Spring Hope National Pumpkin Festival every year on the first weekend of October — a tradition going back to 1971. Over in Bailey, the NC Sweetpotato Festival celebrates one of the region's signature crops with vendors, live music, and a car show each May. Both festivals are free and open to the public, and both are genuinely community-run affairs rather than manufactured tourist events.
Dining
Food across Nash County tends to reflect its small-town, close-knit character — you'll find a lot of family-owned spots rather than chains, especially once you're outside Rocky Mount proper. Nashville's downtown has a handful of local cafes and casual eateries with an easy, small-town feel, plus One of Deez Days Steamhouse for oysters and steamed seafood. Rocky Mount carries the county's widest range: Lou Reda's an American Table and Westridge Grill both anchor the Sunset Avenue restaurant corridor, Lilyann's Steakhouse at Gateway Center covers upscale date-night dining, and El Jimador is the reliable local favorite for Mexican food. Across the smaller towns like Spring Hope and Bailey, dining options are fewer but have real character of their own — Bailey alone has an authentic Italian kitchen, a Tex-Mex spot, and a pizza place.
