Getting to know Tarboro
History
Tarboro is one of North Carolina's oldest towns — the General Assembly chartered "Tarborough" on November 30, 1760, making it the ninth-oldest incorporated town in the state. At the heart of the original town plan, the founders set aside 50 acres for public use, creating the Tarboro Town Common — 15 shaded acres believed to be the second-oldest town common still in existence in the United States, after Boston's. The Common was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and still holds several historic monuments beneath oak trees planted by the town's founders.
That sense of preservation extends well beyond the Common. The Tarboro Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1977, spans 45 blocks and includes more than 300 contributing structures — one of the larger historic districts in North Carolina. Walking those blocks today, from grand Federal and Victorian homes to the old commercial storefronts downtown, gives a genuine sense of more than 260 years of continuous history.
Things to Do & Parks
Downtown, the Blount-Bridgers House is worth a stop — a Federal-style home built around 1808 by Thomas Blount, a prominent local businessman and U.S. congressman. It was restored and opened as a museum in 1979, with the first floor devoted to 19th-century furnishings and Edgecombe County history and the second floor home to the Hobson Pittman Memorial Gallery.
For time outdoors, Riverfront Park runs along the Tar River right next to downtown, with cypress lowlands, landscaped gardens, walking trails, and a boat ramp. Indian Lake Park & Sports Complex offers hiking trails, sports fields, a disc golf course, and camping facilities, and the Tar River itself is part of the Tar River Paddle Trail, a popular stretch for kayaking and canoeing.
Dining
Downtown Tarboro's dining scene centers on spots like On the Square, a longtime favorite on East Saint James Street known for a seasonal menu built around sustainable, local ingredients. Right around the corner, Tarboro Brewing Company — Edgecombe County's first craft brewery, opened in 2016 inside a renovated century-old car dealership — pours its own beer in a taproom that's become a real downtown gathering spot, with tours available most days. Around town you'll also find casual, local staples like Country Sunrise Grill.
