Getting to know Nashville
History
Nash County was formed in 1777 and named for Francis Nash, a Revolutionary War general who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Germantown. Nashville was actually settled around 1780 — four years before the frontier outpost on the Cumberland River took the name "Nashville, Tennessee" in 1784. North Carolina's Nashville didn't receive its formal charter until January 23, 1815, when the General Assembly authorized commissioners to lay out the town's streets and build a courthouse, cementing its role as the Nash County seat.
The town really came into its own after the Civil War, when the arrival of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad in the late 1880s brought a wave of new business and building. Much of what makes downtown Nashville so charming today dates from that boom: the Nashville Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, covers roughly 140 buildings, most built between 1890 and 1930. The current Nash County Courthouse — a Colonial Revival building designed by architect J.C. Stout — went up in 1921 and has been on the National Register since 1979.
Things to Do & Parks
The historic district itself is a big part of the draw — worth a slow walk or drive to take in the Victorian-era homes and storefronts around the square. Nash County Parks & Recreation runs J.W. Glover Memorial Park nearby, with football and multipurpose fields, youth baseball diamonds, and a basketball court, and the Town of Nashville runs its own Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources programs and green space.
Nashville's best-known event is the annual Blooming Festival, held every year on Mother's Day weekend — a four-day celebration with a carnival, live music, and a Saturday parade that draws visitors from well beyond Nash County.
Dining
Downtown Nashville has a handful of local, independently run spots worth knowing. The Nashville Diner on Curtis Street is a longtime local favorite just steps from downtown, and the Nashville Exchange Cafe & Catering on West Washington Street serves breakfast and lunch right in the heart of downtown. For seafood, One of Deez Days Steamhouse on Main Street is an old-school oyster bar doing it right — steamed oysters, shrimp, scallops, and crab legs, nothing fried, with a full bar to go with it. There's an Italian pizzeria on West Washington Street as well. It's a small-town dining scene, but a loyal one — the kind of places where the same faces show up week after week.
