Living in Rocky Mount, NC

History

The town's name comes from a literal rocky mound at the falls of the Tar River — and that same spot became the birthplace of local industry. In 1818, planter Joel Battle and two partners built a cotton mill there, one of the earliest textile mills in the state. Rocky Mount Mills operated for the next 178 years, turning out everything from Confederate uniforms to tobacco twine, and by the 1890s employed some 600 people.

The railroad arrived in 1845 with the Wilmington-Weldon line, connecting Rocky Mount to the wider world and setting the stage for its growth. The town was officially incorporated in 1867, and by the late 1800s a booming tobacco market had overtaken cotton as the area's economic engine, bringing the town's first bank in 1889.

Downtown, the Douglas Block grew into the center of African American commerce and culture in Rocky Mount, anchored by the Douglas Building on North East Main Street. At its peak it was home to shoe shops, bakeries, a funeral home, grocers, and the legendary June German dances that drew touring musicians from the Chitlin' Circuit. The block underwent a three-block redevelopment completed in 2011, and the restored 1920s Booker T. Theater reopened that same year as part of the effort.

Rocky Mount Mills itself sat idle after closing in 1996 until Capitol Broadcasting Company bought the 150-acre site in 2007, kicking off a slow, deliberate revival that's still unfolding today.

Things to Do & Parks

The Rocky Mount Greenway ties together roughly seven parks and nearly 300 acres of green space along the Tar River, running about 3 miles from Sunset Park through Battle Park and into Stith-Talbert Park. It's paved, stroller- and bike-friendly, and includes a long wooden pedestrian bridge, boardwalk sections through the marsh, and spots for fishing and canoe launches along the way.

Sunset Park itself, a 25-acre park on River Drive beside the Tar River, is the town's recreational hub — lighted tennis and basketball courts, an 18-hole disc golf course, a skate park, ball fields, and an old-fashioned amusement area with a miniature train and antique carousel that's become a rite of passage for local kids.

Downtown, the Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences occupies the former Imperial Tobacco Company Warehouse, renovated and reopened in 2006, now home to a children's museum and science center along with the Maria V. Howard Arts Center. And Rocky Mount Mills has become a destination in its own right — the historic mill campus holds several craft breweries, restaurants, a tiny-house hotel, loft apartments, and workspace inside the restored mill buildings.

Dining

Rocky Mount's food scene leans casual and locally rooted, with a few upscale spots holding their own too. Downtown, Lou Reda's an American Table and The Rustler at the Mills both draw praise for their menus, while Lazeez serves up well-regarded Indian food in the heart of downtown. Larema Coffee House is a neighborhood go-to for breakfast and coffee.

On the Mexican side, El Jimador is a reliable family favorite for fajitas and margaritas, and for a special-occasion dinner, Lilyann's Steakhouse at Gateway Center serves premium steaks and craft cocktails in an intimate, upscale setting that's become a genuine hidden gem locally. Out at Rocky Mount Mills, the brewery-and-restaurant cluster adds wood-fired pizza and chef-driven plates to the mix, giving the town a little more variety than its size might suggest.
